Michigan White Cedar

Michigan White Cedar also called Northern White Cedar is a smaller cedar in the cypress family that grows in the swamps of northern Michigan and Canada. I receive my lumber from a small sawmill in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Logs are cut, aged for 3 years, milled into lumber, and then dried to 12% moisture content. Drying cedar slowly results in lumber that has very little stress and warping.

Penetrating Oil Finish

Penofin is an American Company that believes in the same thing I do, an uncompromising approach to high quality products. Penofin is applied inside and out before any post is shipped or installed. Penofin is made from Brazilian Rosewood Oil, which provides deep moisture protection. Being a penetrating product there will never be any chipping, or peeling. In 3 -5 years after installation your post may need to be re-stained to keep the color, but is not necessary since white cedar if left to weather will turn a nice grey. I have installed plenty of naked cedar posts that stand up just fine to the weather.

Granite Post Caps

Granite post caps are 100% natural stone products that are upcycled from countertop manufacturing remnants. There are many different varieties and color options when it comes to granite, but we keep our selection to light and dark colors. To re-create more of a natural stone finish, the granite squares are tumbled to ease sharp edges and dull the glossy finish. Final post caps look more like natural stone then a countertop. The skirting trim is milled in house from Michigan White cedar, stained with Penofin oil, and married to stone using clear Silicone.

Cedar Post Caps

Cedar post caps start out as strips of wood that are glued and laminated together to create a blank that is much less likely to crack or cup. Once the glue has set, the blanks are then processed into a solid cedar post cap. The skirting trim is milled in house from the same white cedar and is held in place using stainless steel brads. These post caps can be customized to any size and from any species of wood.

The Nature of Wood

Part of wood's beauty lies in its natural irregularities. Because of this, wood is unpredictable and inconsistent. The color of stain on wood is affected by many factors outside of the control of Wood House Carpentry including but not limited to type of wood, color of wood, grain pattern, sanding, humidity, and natural lights and darks in the wood. Every monitor and printer displays colors differently therefore samples shown online or in print are for basic comparison purposes only and should not be used as exact references. Wood is one of the toughest materials to protect due to a high exposure to light and other harsh elements. Wood House Carpentry has searched out the best materials and processes available to slow the natural fading and weathering process but even when treated with the best materials and processes wood still fades and weathers. By choosing wood you are accepting the natural and acceptable differences and you are accepting the fact that wood fades and weathers. By choosing Wood House Carpentry to stain your project you agree to release Wood House Carpentry from any liability that may arise from color matching or fading and weathering. Services provided by Wood House Carpentry are provided “As Is” without warranties of any kind either express or implied.
